This vineyard, acquired by the Roumier family in 1953, is named after the Abbaye de la Bussière, was first planted by the Cistercian monks of the abbey in the 12th century. The entire wall-enclosed vineyard, with its abbey, underground cellar and chapel, has remained a Monopole since the beginning. The parcel sits on a dome of rock that peaks above the surrounding acres of red clay; on its west side it is separated from the stony slopes of Bonnes-Mares and Clos de Tart. Christophe prefers a gentle hand in winemaking; he likes the surprise each vineyard provides. He modestly gives the impression that he simply interprets the character of wine that is made by the terroir, the vintage and the grape. Along the chain of transformation he is required to intervene from time to time, to help extract the pure expression of the soil through the medium of the grape.
