Founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, Domaine G. Roumier holds the standard for sensational Burgundy. Now headed by Georges’ grandson, Christophe, the winery uses mostly destemmed fruit, which ferments and ages in oak. This Grand Cru knockout is aged in 40% new oak and bottled unfiltered, showing a concentrated and complex palate that only Bonnes-Mares could provide.

"As I noted last year, with the addition of an additional half hectare of vines in Bonnes-Mares through a mettayage agreement, the balance of this cuvée has been shifted towards terres blanches and the wine seems to have a bit more chalk-derived raciness to its personality in the last two years. The 2017 Bonnes-Mares is going to be absolutely brilliant, as the wine offers up a deep, refined and properly reserved aromatic constellation of red and black cherries, plums, raw cocoa, a very complex base of minerality, gamebird, woodsmoke and a deft touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with a beautiful stylistic combination of sappiness and great transparency, ripe, buried tannins and stunning length and grip on the poised, perfectly balanced and oh, so promising finish. This is a brilliant and very elegant, young Bonnes-Mares. (Drink between 2032-2100)"

Though somewhat brooding, this smoky, licorice-tinged red features black cherry, plum, iron and spice flavors. Solidly built and expanding on the long, spicy aftertaste. Impeccably balanced, but needs to stretch out a little. Best from 2023 through 2045.

"The Roumier holdings, divided one-third red soils to two-thirds white, add up to 1.89ha over six parcels - if only the domaine had as much Musigny! This shows the richer, meatier notes of Bonnes Mares, with savoury tannins, underlying power and a fresh, chalky finish. A very good expression of the grand cru. Drinking Window 2025 - 2032."

"The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is one of the wines of the vintage this year, unfurling in the glass with a profound bouquet of red and black cherries, espresso roast, dark chocolate, peony and subtle hints of forest floor. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and layered, with striking concentration and dimension, rich but fine-grained structuring tannins and a bright line of animating acidity, concluding with a finish that's simultaneously chalky and distinctly floral. This will be one of the most long-lived 2017 red Burgundies. The 2017 vintage is very strong for the Domaine Georges Roumier, with the wines somewhat evocative of their 2007 counterparts—wines which were, as Roumier followers will be keenly aware, very much among the best of the vintage in that year. Elevage is a leisurely affair chez Roumier, with comparatively late malolactic fermentation, so the true extent of what Christophe Roumier has achieved this year will only be apparent once the wines are in bottle, but the only thing that's in question is just how good the wines will be. As I reported when I tasted these same wines earlier this year, yields in 2017 averaged a modest 32 hectoliters per hectare across the board, with a larger crop at the village level and less in the premiers and grands crus. Thankfully, after several successive small crops, the generous 2017 and 2018 vintages have at last left a little less empty space in the Roumier cellar, which is great news."
