domaine castagnier charmes chambertin grand cru 2018 750ml
Jerome Castagnier chose a profession as a trumpeter in the Republican Guard rather than take the helm of the family domaine. In 2004, he left Paris and the army to return home to Morey-St-Denis. There he experienced the 2005 harvest alongside his father and grandfather. He is the fifth generation to run the domaine. Jules Séguin was the founder and through passage from the female line and sons-in-law, the family name has changed. Since 2004 the wines have been bottled as Domaine Castagnier.
Jerome’s dogmatic character led him to take over the domain and build a new cellar in 2006, as his father’s health declined. This led to big improvements in the wines with Jerome embracing biodynamic farming, meticulously sorting each lot, and selecting specific forests for barrels to match each wine. The domaine has assembled five prestigious grands crus vineyards.
Vines are situated on a 0.99-acre plot planted in 1947 and 1952 next to Routes de Grands Crus up the slope from the nationale. Biodynamic practices employed in the vineyard, but no certification.
AROMA: Red berries aromas withsavory notes.
TASTE: A behemoth of a wine with great structure, depth and concentration. Tends to show red currant, cranberry, sour cherry fruit through to the finish. Needs time to further develop.
