Jerome Castagnier chose a profession as a trumpeter in the Republican Guard rather than take the helm of the family domaine. In 2004, he left Paris and the army to return home to Morey-St-Denis. There he experienced the 2005 harvest alongside his father and grandfather. He is the fifth generation to run the domaine. Jules Séguin was the founder and through passage from the female line and sons-in-law, the family name has changed. Since 2004 the wines have been bottled as Domaine Castagnier.
Jerome’s dogmatic character led him to take over the domain and build a new cellar in 2006, as his father’s health declined. This led to big improvements in the wines with Jerome embracing biodynamic farming, meticulously sorting each lot, and selecting specific forests for barrels to match each wine. The domaine has assembled five prestigious grands crus vineyards.
Rows overlap two lieu-dits, Les Fermieres and Les Mochamps on 1.48 acres planted in 1960 and 1965/1966 on a steep hill of 918 feet. Biodynamic practices employeed in the vineyard, but no certification.
TASTING NOTES
COLOR: Med-Dark Ruby
AROMA: Blueberry and plum with oak notes.
TASTE: This Grand Cru tends toward dark, dense plump plummy flavors. Generous oak and grainy tannins needs a bit of time to better integrate. Additional cellaring recommended. Well balanced and firmly structured.
