Jerome Castagnier chose a profession as a trumpeter in the Republican Guard rather than take the helm of the family domaine. In 2004, he left Paris and the army to return home to Morey-St-Denis. There he experienced the 2005 harvest alongside his father and grandfather. He is the fifth generation to run the domaine. Jules Séguin was the founder and through passage from the female line and sons-in-law, the family name has changed. Since 2004 the wines have been bottled as Domaine Castagnier.
Jerome’s dogmatic character led him to take over the domain and build a new cellar in 2006, as his father’s health declined. This led to big improvements in the wines with Jerome embracing biodynamic farming, meticulously sorting each lot, and selecting specific forests for barrels to match each wine. The domaine has assembled five prestigious grands crus vineyards.
Clos Saint-Denis is a grand cru vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis, in Burgundy’s famous Côte de Nuits. It is located on the mid-slope of the Cote d’Or escarpment, immediately north of Morey-Saint-Denis village, and covers just 6 hectares (15 acres) of land. Clos Saint-Denis wines are made from Pinot Noir, and are more aromatic and delicate than the wines from the neighboring Clos de la Roche Grand Cru vineyard.
The vineyard is 984-1050 feet on a slope above Clos de la Roche on a 0.89 acre plot planted in 1967 and 1995. Biodynamic practices employed in the vineyard, but no certification.
