Giorgio Lungarotti, an Umbrian-born wine-visionary decided in the early 1950's to turn his family's agricultural operations into a specialized wine estate. He created his signature red wine, Rubesco, and put Umbria on the world wine map.
Inspired by the passion for Umbria's grape varieties, beginning in the 1960s, the Lungarotti family campaigned for the creation of the Torgiano DOC, a designation received in 1968 and one of the very first in Italy. In 1990, DOCG status was granted to Torgiano Rosso Riserva, with retroactive recognition to the 1983 vintage. All their wines are also certified organic.
Varietals: 100% Sangiovese
Terroir: "Vigna Monticchio," 35-acre hillside vineyard at about 885 ft. with western exposure. Located on the Brufa hillside which has significant variety of soils, layers of clay alternate with sandy layers, the latter being more frequent at the mid- and lower-hill.
Vinification: Fermentation in stainless steel with 25-28 days of maceration on the skins. Aged in oak barriques and barrels for 12 months followed by a light filtering - bottle refined for five years. Limited production of 40,000 bottles.
TASTING
An elegant wine with solid structure, deep ruby colour and complex aroma that recalls marasca cherries and blackberries, followed by notes of violet, light mentholated hints and a spicy finish. A wine of great concentration, fruity and slightly balsamic, it has soft and velvety tannins with a long, lingering finish.
