FROG'S LEAP CHARDONNAY "SHALE AND STONE" 2018
The Shale and Stone comes from a vineyard planted in 1979. As you might expect, it's heavily shale-based, giving the wine the first part of its name. Once the Chardonnay grapes are harvested, they see only a little time (less than five days) in oak barrels before being racked to concrete for aging—representing the "stone" part of the wine. According to Frog's Leap winemaker and owner John Williams, it represents a "style that celebrates the deep minerality of its ancient fractured shale soils and preserves the freshness of the varietal with long sur lie aging in concrete. The result is this stunning 2018 Chardonnay: taut but generous, full yet bright on the palate. Flavorful but not obvious."
