The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that he had vines in some of Germany's best-rated vineyards. To maximize the potential of those vines, he restricts crop size, uses only organic fertilization, insists on very strict fruit selection, and employs gentle cellar practices with a minimum of handling.
THE MOSEL REGION
Located in far western Germany, the Mosel valley's steep, southfacing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. The cool climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity.
BLUE SLATE RIESLING KABINETT
This classic Mosel Kabinett is harvested from higher-elevation parcels owned by Dr. Loosen in the villages of Bernkastel, Graach and Wehlen. The wine is bright and pure with the vibrant white peach fruit and a floral, flinty minerality that is so typical from blue slate. A plush attack on the mid-palate leads to a deliciously firm, delicate finish. This wine makes an elegant aperitif and is an excellent match for seafood, spicy Asian cuisine and lighter dishes.
THE 2021 VINTAGE
The year 2021 proved to be a stark contrast to the recent climate trend, because it was considerably cooler and wetter than the previous six years. This contrast led to challenges in the vineyard that had us working hard until the very last day, but it was all worth it. This Riesling shines with fine fruit, wonderful slate minerality and a pronounced raciness, which are all elements of a classic Mosel vintage and one that is already proving itself to be quite pleasurable to drink.

"The 2021 Blue Slate Riesling Kabinett AP #1 from Weingut Dr. Loosen is a pretty example of its Prädikat level. The wine carries forty grams of residual sugar this year, to balance off its 8.5 grams of acidity and is eight percent octane. The bouquet here is refined and complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of pear, white cherry, apple blossoms, a touch of wild yeast, a lovely base of slate and a topnote of bee pollen. On the palate the wine is zesty, medium-full and filigreed, with excellent mineral drive and focus, bouncy acids and a long, youthfully complex and seamlessly balanced finish. Good juice. 2022-2050+"
