For centuries, peat (or turf as it is known locally) was widely used in Ireland to dry cereal crops and to fire the stills. Over the last century this tradition was lost until it was revived to produce world-famous Connemara Single Malt. Opened back in 1757, the Old Kilbeggan Distillery is the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in Ireland.
