WINERY

Valpolicella and Soave are two of the most ubiquitous Italian DOC wines. The Castagnedis have turned them into something far beyond ordinary. They have also crafted superlative Amarone. In 1995, the four Castagnedi brothers, having tended their father Antonio's vineyards while growing up, decided to found their own venture with the goal of producing premium DOC wines. Tenuta Sant'Antonio has earned its reputation as a premium and progressive producer of Veneto DOC wines (Amarone, Valpolicella, Ripasso, Passito, Soave and Recioto della Valpolicella), as well as Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Tenuta Sant'Antonio wines are made from 100% estate-grown fruit from its vineyards in Soave in the Val d'Illasi, and Monti Garbi, its 100 hectares estate vineyard, 20 ht in the Soave area and 80 ht in the Valpolicella area.

WINEMAKER NOTES

Characterized by an intense ruby red color with purple reflections. The scent is typical of Amarone which consists of ripe red fruit, spicy aromas of licorice, black pepper and notes of chocolate. The flavors are well balanced, with soft, warm, slightly savory and elegant round tannins, with a long and fresh finish thanks to the balsamic notes that distinguish it. Pair with savory first courses, red meats, and mature cheeses.

Blend: 70% Corvina and Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, 5% Croatina, 5% Oseleta

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

WA93, Wine Advocate

"Made with a special selection of fruit, the Tenuta Sant'Antonio Famiglia Castagnedi 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Antonio Castagnedi has a sweet-smelling bouquet with pressed fruit, candied cherry, rum cake and raisins. Unlike some of its peers from this cooler vintage, the wine is void of any of the herbal or medicinal aromas that appear in neighboring estates in 2018. In fact, the wine shows balanced results with a hint more firmness in terms of its tannic structure. Some 100,000 bottles were released."

JS93, James Suckling

"Plenty of spicy and meaty nuances to the dried red and black fruit on the nose, together with hints of walnut oil and pressed flowers. It’s full, but there’s a nimbler feel to the palate this year, with plenty of bright dried fruit and almost salty mineral freshness. The tannins are well-integrated. Long and intense. Give it a year or two to even out. Try from 2024."

WE91, Wine Enthusiast

"Dried cherry, dried cranberry, star anise, clove and a hint of pepper open the nose of this well-crafted Amarone. Soft and plush on the palate, highlighting dried cherry and loads of baking spices, the wine begins to reveal turned earth, bitter chocolate and floral notes as it opens. It’s really well-structured, with elegant tannins and the needed acidity to keep the wine in balance."
