ANTINORI PIAN DELLE VIGNE ROSSO DI MONTALCINO 2016

The Rosso di Montalcino was first created in 2012 after several years of experimentation aimed at producing a highlevel wine suitable to join the other two wines of the estate: Pian delle Vigne and the Brunello Riserva Vignaferrovia. The Pian delle Vigne estate is located 3.5 miles (six kilometers) to the south of Montalcino and takes its name from a typical railroad station located within the confines of the property. The estate consists of approximately 460 acres (184 hectares) of land, with some 160 acres (65 hectares) planted to vines. The vineyards, with an exposure which is principally to the southeast, are situated at an altitude between 430 and 660 feet (130-200 meters) above sea level.

VINTAGE NOTES:
The 2016 vintage was characterized by a winter which saw little rainfall and by a mild spring. These climatic conditions favored a slightly early bud break and flowering, balanced by a regular epoch of bud set. The summer had temperatures above normal seasonal averages, particularly during July and August. Light rainfall during September and the fall in temperatures assisted the grapes in achieving full ripeness, giving the Sangiovese a surprising freshness along with balanced and supple tannins. The picking of the Sangiovese grapes took place during the second half of the month of September.

The grapes were given a light pressing and the extraction during the fermentation took place at temperatures around 77 Fahrenheit. The period of skin contact lasted 8-10 days. After the fermentation and the subsequent malolactic fermentation, the wine aged in large oak casks for 12 months.

TASTING NOTES:
The 2016 Rosso is garnet red in color and complex in aroma with notes of red fruit and spices. Full and velvety on the palate with a long finish and aftertaste.
