BODEGA COLOME CAFAYATE CALCHAQUI VALLEY ALTURA MAXIMA MALBEC 2014

With the Andes as a backdrop and closeborders of Bolivia and Chile, the Argentina region of Salta is less accessible than regions best known for wine in the country; Some even consider it an impenetrable area. Begun in 2007, with approximately 56 total acres planted, the vineyard's maximum elevation, or "Altura Maxima", is 3,111 meters (approximately 10,207 feet) and produced this Malbec inaugural harvest in 2012. The real expression of terroir in this Malbec comes from the extreme altitude of the vineyard, the composition of the soil (alluvial and sandy soils with a high percentage of gravel) and semi-arid desert climate. The vineyard receives more sun and less UV protection, which produces grapes with a thicker skin offering a robust sensation in the mouth, besides fresh acidity. Winemaker Thibaut Delmotte has made wines that have earned recognition and distinction internationally for Colome. He believes the Altura Maxima Malbec is a representation of two ends- a grape variety traditionally made in France being produced in a vineyard that defies convention in the world of modern wine.
