Overlooking the Dordogne valley in a village two miles east of Saint-Emilion, this pretty vineyard is planted on a clay-limestone slope thanks to which the northern and eastern parcels enjoy perfect morning sunshine. Chateau Puy-Blanquet was known as one of the best Saint-Emilion Grand Crus as early as the 19th century, and was awarded a part of the collective gold medal bestowed upon a selection of Saint-Emilion chateaux at the Paris Exposition of 1889.
Today the vineyard is owned by the Jacquet family and managed by Pierre Meunier, who was trained by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix, with a real respect for tradition and quality. Soils are ploughed in order to ensure deeper root systems; green harvest, leaf-cropping, and harvests are done by hand. Thermo-regulated concrete tanks ensure well-controlled fermentations.
The wines are fresh and generous and can be enjoyed after just two or three years of cellaring.
Vineyard grape varietals:
Varietals: 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc
JS92, James Suckling
"Focused fruit, such as raspberries and blackberries with chalk and flowers. Full body, firm and chewy tannins and a long and defined finish. Quite muscular. Try after 2021."
RP90, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"The 2016 Puy-Blanquet is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It has plenty of lush red cherry and cranberry fruit on the nose, a smear of vanilla from the new oak that will be subsumed by the time of bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannin. Yes, there is a bit of hardness here, but that will soften, and there is plenty of freshness on the grainy finish. Fine."
WS90, Wine Spectator
"Pure and focused, with damson plum, red currant and raspberry coulis flavors entwined at the core, while a bright, iron-tinged streak of mineral adds lift throughout. Shows mouthwatering drive on the finish. A wine of elegant charm. Best from 2021 through 2030."
