The Domain of Pez, created in the 15th century, is, along with Calon, the oldest in Saint-Estephe. In 1452, squire Jean de Briscos ruled the estate; in 1526 the "noble man" Ducos was master, followed by Jean de Pontac in 1585. The Pontac family, who likewise created Haut-Brion, gave Pez its vineyards. The property remained in the hands of descendants -the Marquis d'Aulede and Count de Fumel, Commander of the Province of Guyenne- until the French Revolution. Sold as a property of the state, the domain belonged to the Tarteiron, Balguerie, Lawton, du Vivier, Bernard, and Dousson families in succession. It was purchased in June 1995 by Champagne Louis Roederer. Thanks to the quality of its production, Chateau de Pez is counted among the most highly reputed crus of the Medoc.

The Chateau de Pez winery remains resolutely faithful to wood. The blend is composed in December, then the wine is stored in barrels (40% new wood, 40% in "Premier vin" casks and 20% in "Deuxieme vin" casks) and racked every three months. It is to be noted that the wine undergoes absolutely no filtration. Chateau de Pez exhibits deep color and harmonious composition. This complete, rich, dense wine merits prolonged ageing. Thanks to the quality of its production, Chateau de Pez is counted among the most highly reputed crus of the Medoc. Despite all of the surprises, fears and doubts, 2015 turned out to be a remarkable vintage. The growing cycle took place in perfect conditions up until some extremely dry weather in July, leading to worries over low yields. The rain and associated fungal diseases that we usually fear turned out to work for us from mid-July to mid-September, enabling the vine to reach optimum ripeness levels. The wines are distinctive and exceptionally precise yet also dense and restrained. They remind us of the extremely dense yet ethereal Bordeaux's of the 1980s, with an excellent ageing potential yet able to be enjoyed in their youth.

Blend: 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot

Critical Acclaim:

WE95, Wine Enthusiast

"This wine is dense, classic for Saint-Estèphe. Bold black fruits and dark hues are set to give a wine that will take its time. Tannins are surrounded by berry fruits and richness."

JS92, James Suckling

"Ripe berries, plums, spice and cedar aromas follow through to a medium body, creamy tannins and a delicious finish. Some nice acidity here too. Thyme character to the fruit at the end."

D92, Decanter

"Extremely drinkable and very easy to recommend. The tannins are already showing elasticity and a sense of embracing the fruit without constricting it. No need to wait too long - give it two or three years to soften further, and then enjoy for the next decade. 4% Petit Verdot completes the blend."

JD92, Jeb Dunnuck

"I was able to taste the 2020 Chateau De Pez on multiple occasions, and it never failed to impress. This outstanding Saint-Estephe reveals a semi-opaque purple hue as well as textbook aromatics of ripe black and blue fruits, truffly earth, violets, and leafy tobacco. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has a silky, elegant mouthfeel, light tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. It lacks a touch of oomph, but this balanced, graceful, incredibly pure 2020 will benefit from just 4-5 years of bottle age and should see its 20th birthday in fine form. Best After 2027"
