Chateau De Pez
chateau de pez saint-estephe 2017
The Domain of Pez, created in the 15th century, is, along with Calon, the oldest in Saint-Estephe. In 1452, squire Jean de Briscos ruled the estate; in 1526 the "noble man" Ducos was master, followed by Jean de Pontac in 1585. The Pontac family, who likewise created Haut-Brion, gave Pez its vineyards. The property remained in the hands of descendants -the Marquis d'Aulede and Count de Fumel, Commander of the Province of Guyenne- until the French Revolution. Sold as a property of the state, the domain belonged to the Tarteiron, Balguerie, Lawton, du Vivier, Bernard, and Dousson families in succession. It was purchased in June 1995 by Champagne Louis Roederer. Thanks to the quality of its production, Chateau de Pez is counted among the most highly reputed crus of the Medoc.
The Chateau de Pez winery remains resolutely faithful to wood. The blend is composed in December, then the wine is stored in barrels (40% new wood, 40% in "Premier vin" casks and 20% in "Deuxieme vin" casks) and racked every three months. It is to be noted that the wine undergoes absolutely no filtration. Chateau de Pez exhibits deep color and harmonious composition. This complete, rich, dense wine merits prolonged ageing. Thanks to the quality of its production, Chateau de Pez is counted among the most highly reputed crus of the Medoc. Despite all of the surprises, fears and doubts, 2015 turned out to be a remarkable vintage. The growing cycle took place in perfect conditions up until some extremely dry weather in July, leading to worries over low yields. The rain and associated fungal diseases that we usually fear turned out to work for us from mid-July to mid-September, enabling the vine to reach optimum ripeness levels. The wines are distinctive and exceptionally precise yet also dense and restrained. They remind us of the extremely dense yet ethereal Bordeaux's of the 1980s, with an excellent ageing potential yet able to be enjoyed in their youth.
53% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.5% Petit Verdot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc

94 points - Wine Enthusiast
"This wine is powerfully concentrated and rich. Bold black fruits dominate, bringing the tannins along with them. Drink the wine from 2024."
90 points - James Suckling
"Sweet-tobacco and plum aromas lead into a medium-bodied palate with firm, silky tannins and a savory finish. Some chocolate and tobacco at the end. Drink in 2021."
