MOUNTFORD ESTATE CHARDONNAY 2007
WINERY NOTES
Pale straw to gold with wide green hue.
Smokey dark chocolate with Christmas fruit aromas. The oak is not obvious, only giving a slight nuttiness.
Dry intense linear structure, similar to an oak aged Chablis with good mineral and acid finish. Sweetness of fruit on the palate will become obvious with some bottle age.
Expect slow maturation and long term cellaring giving a more complex wine. This Chardonnay is whole bunch pressed on a champagne cycle.
One third new 228 l French oak barrels were used. Barrel fermented and matured with once a fortnight lees stirring. Filtered to a bright polish, bottled under screw cap and cork for comparison.
Matured in French oak for 14-16 months, the 2007 Chardonnay is very deep in color. It has an intriguing nose: complex, well integrated oak, creamy at first but making way for scents of pineapple, lemon curd, pear, fig and walnut. The palate is full-bodied, very well balanced, spicy and vibrant with wonderful harmony. Lovely build in the mouth, leading to notes of orange zest, passion fruit, nectarine and green lemon. Superb length, I am unsure that it has the propensity to age like others, but it delivers a lot of flavor straight from the off.
