About “A Taste of California”
 The sheer variety of wines and wine styles in California can cause even experienced wine drinkers to fall into a confused stupor when trying to make selections from a wine list. In this tasting, we explore four wines from two different wine regions, beginning with a chardonnay and a pinot noir from the Edna Valley near San Luis Obispo in California's sprawling Central Coast wine region. The Edna Valley, with its proximity to the cool winds and fog of the Pacific Ocean, has an important quality for both chardonnay and pinot noir - warm days and cool nights. Coupled with many nuances provided by the winemakers at Carpe Diem, both of these wines achieve that elusive quality called "balance." Just what is balance? Lyn demonstrates with clear examples that take this often abstract concept bandied about by wine lovers into the realm of a quality that you will ever after find easy to identify and taste. Then, we head north to the Napa Valley to explore wine style, how the same wine from the same area tastes different depending on how it's made. Both Carpe Diem and Napanook make Cabernet Sauvignon in a style easy to appreciate in a wine's youth; in fact, the same winemaker works on both wines, and yet they still have their differences, giving us the opportunity to explore the sorts of nuance and personal preference that will forever enhance your wine-drinking vocabulary, as well as providing you with great wine to drink. Our Taste of California is also an exercise in good taste. |
